[General] [Attendance] [Registration] [Workshops] [Emergency]
Q: What is Expanding Your Horizons (EYH)?
A: DVC's EYH is a career conference specially designed for middle school girls. The conference encourages girls' interest in math, science, and technology and provides positive female role models in science, math, and engineering careers.
Q: What will my daughter do at EYH?
A: Your daughter will participate in two 70-minute workshops that she selected when registering for the conference. Workshops are taught by scientists, engineers, or other professionals and involve hands-on interactive instruction. In addition, she will hear a 20 minute talk by a scientist. Finally, she will participate in a career "treasure hunt", which will allow her to discuss education and career choices with a wide diversity of professionals from industry, academia, public service, the military, and scientific research labs.
Q: What are the schedule?
A: Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 9:00 p.m. Girls will be provided with a light snack and a lunch. The program ends at 2:00 p.m.
Q: My daughter has a special diet. What food is provided?
A: Conference attendees are provided with a bottled water or milk and string cheese as a light snack with their registration packet. For lunch, there is pizza, fruit, water/milk, and a cookie. If your daughter cannot eat these foods or needs to eat more often, please have her bring her own.

Q: Can my daughter register even though she's not yet in 6th grade?
A: Due to space limitations and the popularity of the conference, we are forced to turn away students every year within the advertised 6-8 grade group. Also, the curriculum content is geared to middle and high school. We strictly enforce our grade requirements. Please come back when your daughter is in the 6th grade!
Q: We do not live in the central Contra Costa County area, but our daughter is in grades 6-8. Can she register?
A: Yes, she may register. You do not need to live in the central Contra Costa County area to attend the conference. Daughters of volunteers who live outside the area are also welcome to attend but need to register for the conference like everyone else.
Q: Can my son attend?
A: The conference is geared towards girls. Boys in grades 6-8 can attend, but they should understand this is a girl-serving program and they may be the only boy at the conference.
Q: Can I be with my daughter at the conference or come in with her when I drop her off?
A: Your daughter needs to be mature enough to attend the conference without a parent. You may not tag along with her at the conference.
Q: How do I register my daughter(s) for the conference?
A: Download and print the conference/registration form from the Conference Registration link in the left-hand navigation menu on the EYH home page. Each student must be separately registered. The registration fee is $10 per student. The registration is closed for 2008. Space is limited, and the conference fills up quickly, so register early.
Q: Can my daughter come as a stand-by on the day of the conference?
A: We accept stand-by registration on the day of the conference on a first-come, first-served basis and as space allows. You must come to the registration desk with your daughter to make sure she gets into the conference and to pay the registration fee. Workshops will be assigned as space allows.
Workshops
Q: What if my daughter does not like the workshops she gets?
A: The EYH conference is designed so to expand your daughter's horizons and for her to learn new things! Please have her keep an open mind and try something new. Workshops are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so register early and preferably online.
Q: My daughter wants to be in the same workshop as her friend, sister, etc. and won't go if she can't be. Can she get in even though it says full?
A: Workshop limits are set so that each girl gets personal attention and hands-on experience. If the workshop indicates full, your daughter will need to make another selection. We do not maintain a workshop wait list. Next year, have your daughter coordinate with her friends and register early.
Q: Can my daughter be on the waiting list for her favorite workshop or for conference registration?
A: We do not keep waiting lists for workshops or conference registration. If you would like to attend the conference and were unable to register in advance, please see the answer above to "Can I come as a stand-by on the day of the conference?" under Registration.
Q: My daughter accidentally registered for the wrong workshop. Can I change it?
A: We will attempt to accommodate your request, but keep in mind, workshops fill quickly, and we cannot add anyone once a workshop is full. Please choose your workshops carefully! Call or e-mail the EYH hotline for assistance.
