DSS - Specialized Learning Strategies

Learning Skills 60

Under section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, students with disabilities must have access to general college services. The DSS program may offer specialized tutoring services; but the services must be disability-related tutoring rather than general tutoring available through the Learning Center, EOPS, or other [college] sources. Title 5 regulations prohibit provision of services or instruction that duplicate those otherwise available to all students. Therefore, DSS tutoring services must not replace or supplant existing general college tutoring services. [Title 5, Section IIIA(b)(11)].

DSS at DVC offers academic support to students with disabilities enrolled in DVC courses through LRNSK 60. LRNSK 60 is a semester-long course in which students sign up for two to three sessions per week. A learning disabilities specialist and instructional assistants work with students in small groups (up to three students) in Math, Study Skills, and Written Language. Students can earn .3 units to .5 units, depending upon the number of hours completed in a given semester. The emphasis of LRNSK 60 is strategies based learning. Thus, students will be taught to devise and follow specific techniques that will address issues in their course work, such as how to read a text book chapter more efficiently, how to write an essay, and how to approach math problems. Each student will learn strategies that are unique to his/her learning style and course work demands.

Eligibility

Students with disabilities enrolled in an academic course at DVC and who have the academic potential to succeed in a college setting may enroll in LRNSK 60. Students will be expected to comply with the policy and procedures in order to maintain their enrollment status in this course.

Policy

  1. Eligibility for LRNSK 60 will be determined by a DSS Counselor or Learning Disabilities Specialist. Once eligibility is determined, students must re-enroll each semester.

  2. Students will be required to comply with the course syllabus and show proof of enrollment in the DVC course(s) for which they are requesting academic assistance.

  3. Students enrolled in LRNSK 60 for support in specific courses must have satisfied the course prerequisites, and completed recommended coursework.

  4. As with any DVC course, students must meet attendance requirements (no more than three absences per semester) or they will be dropped by the instructor.

NOTE:

Students who are enrolled in, but have not yet completed LRNSK 49 (Learning Disability Assessment) may enroll in LRNSK 60 as space is available, with priority given to students already verified as eligible for services.

Procedures
