What can I do with an addiction counseling degree or certificate?

After a student has earned a degree/certificate of achievement in addiction counseling he or she is well prepared for employment in the addiction field.

Upon completing the DVC degree/certificate of achievement program, a student may apply for any of the state recognized professional credentials offered by the following organizations:

  • California Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (CAADAC)

  • California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE)

  • California Association of Addiction Recovery Resources (CAARR)

Each of these certificates has additional testing and/or field practicum hours required, but all of the educational coursework is completed when you finish the ADS certificate at the college.

All the units of credit earned through the program are transferable to four-year colleges and universities. Students interested in a B.A. degree in social work, public health education, human services, nursing, psychology or criminal justice can begin their studies in the DVC addiction studies program.

As more and more emphasis is being placed on treatment for those with alcohol and drug dependency issues, there is a growing demand for a highly trained workforce with the skills gained from this certificate program.

When are classes offered?

Courses are offered in the afternoon, evening and weekends. Both full-term and short-term courses are available.

How long will it take to earn a degree/certificate?

Students generally take 4-6 semesters to complete all of the courses required for the certificate of achievement, but you may take the courses at your own pace. A.S. degree requirements can generally be completed in two years of full-time study.

How much can I expect to earn once I complete the program?

Addiction workers earn anywhere from $20,000 - $45,000 per year, depending on the agency and their experience.

What if I’m not ready to undertake the full addiction counseling certificate at this time?

For those students who want to learn more about the addiction and recovery process, but are not ready or don’t intend to undertake the addiction counseling certificate, a 21-unit addiction studies certificate is available. This certificate is for students who want a specialized focus in addiction, treatment, and recovery, but are not preparing to become an addiction counselor. This certificate may be useful for teachers, human services personnel, or community service personnel who want to have a deeper understanding of the addiction process.
