A collection of new work by DVC faculty Fran Brown and Joy Broom features mixed media artwork that uses encaustic, or hot wax painting, which involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface. Metal tools and special brushes can be used to shape the paint before it cools, or heated metal tools can be used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled onto the surface. Each artist approaches the application of encaustic painting differently. Fran Brown's work has a very painterly abstract quality while Joy Broom's work incorporates repurposed and found objects.
