Positive Leadership Training: Part 1 [Staff development]
10 am - 12 pm;

Presenter: Pamela Hawkins, DVC Business Professor;

Workshop 1 – Communication and Teamwork.

The ‘New DVC’ Committees and Councils are classic examples of matrix departmentalization and cross-functional teams. In the first workshop, we will take a comprehensive look at the advantages of matrix organizations, review best practices and brainstorm workable solutions to avoid matrix organizational pitfalls including:

• misaligned goals,

• unclear roles and responsibilities,

• ambiguous authority,

• silo-focused team members.

Leaders need tools to create positive results. We will discuss how to plan for effective communication by anticipating situations, selecting proper channels, and considering the receiver’s frame of reference. Further, we will explore how to reinforce key ideas, encourage feedback, and become better listeners---- all keys to effective team building.

Positive Leadership Training: Part 2 [Staff development]
10 am - 12 pm;

Presenter: Pamela Hawkins;

Workshop 2 – Achieve Higher Performance.

One of the strengths of an organization like DVC is that it encourages innovation and positive action. It takes peak performances from all members to remain responsive in an environment that strives for genuine collaboration.

The trademark of ‘best of class’ organizations is how well it develops its people for peak performance. Coaching is essential to development. Leaders need to continually coach and be coached. This workshop will focus on clarifying goals, priorities, and standards of performance through the use of coaching functions.

The workshop will examine the core skills of coaching. Tutoring – encourage team members to learn grow, and develop. Mentoring – help to develop others. It may teach political savvy, DVC’s/CCCCD culture, key players are in given circumstances, the relevance of past and current events. Confronting/challenging – establish clear performance standards and measurement criteria. Counseling – help others to determine their own course of action by recognizing, talking about, gaining insight, and solving real or perceived problems that affect performance. (For those who do not supervise directly, the coaching function can be applied personally, so an individual can be a more effective advocate for their own career advancement.)

Last Day To Drop Full-term Class With No "W" [SRC]
Today is your last opportunity to drop a full-term class without a "W" (for "withdrew") or a letter grade being entered in your record. If you decide later to drop this class, your record will show a "W" if you drop by April 30, 2010; after that date, your record will show the letter grade you have earned. Note: too many "W's" in your record may exclude you from registering in the future -- discuss this with a counselor or A&R
